Turning the World Upside Down – Acts 17:6-7

“These men who have turned the world upside down have come here too, and Jason has received them as guests! They are all acting contrary to Caesar’s decrees, saying that there is another king—Jesus!” (Acts 17:6-7, HCSB).

In Thessalonica the conversion of a great number of God-fearing Greeks and leading women prompted jealousy among unbelieving Jews. While the Apostle Paul had encountered resistance just about everywhere he went during his missionary journeys, here the Jews organized scoundrels from the marketplace to form a mob and start a riot against Paul and Silas.

Enemy Occupied Territory – Exodus 6:5-6

“You can be sure that I have heard the groans of the people of Israel, who are now slaves to the Egyptians. And I am well aware of my covenant with them. Therefore, say to the people of Israel: I am the Lord. I will free you from your oppression and will rescue you from your slavery in Egypt. I will redeem you with a powerful arm and great acts of judgment” (Exodus 6:5-6, NLT).

Moses was commissioned by God to lead the Israelites out of Egyptian bondage. Before confronting Pharaoh, Moses and his brother Aaron met with the Israelite leaders and rallied them with the hope that God would rescue them from Egyptian slavery, as stated in these verses.

When Moses and Aaron demanded in God’s name that Pharaoh release the Israelites, Pharaoh considered their demands an affront to his own sovereignty and reacted by increasing the Israelites’ workloads to an overwhelming level.

The more Moses demanded the release of the Israelites, the tougher Pharaoh made their lives.

This defining moment in the history of Israel is a classic case of the adversity one may encounter individually and collectively when trying to live faithfully for God.

When we are trying to live for God and obey Him, we should not be surprised or dismayed when we are confronted by hardships and adversities.

Because we live in enemy-occupied territory!

There is a dark power in the universe, Satan the devil, who was created by God but rebelled against Him.

And, Satan enticed humanity to commit the same sin (rebellion) he did. When humanity joined Satan in his rebellion against God, we became natural born citizens of Satan’s domain.

Since this dark power was originally created by God, his insurrection does not even constitute a war between equal or independent powers. It is more like a civil war—an uprising of a subversive political faction trying to overthrow a legitimate government.

And the main issue in this conflict is not an individual’s personal sins, though one’s sins may be many or few.

The real issue in this cosmic conflict is where your allegiance is—you are either a part of the rebellion or a citizen of God’s Kingdom (Colossians 1:12-13).

Satan and his cohorts continuously attempt to thwart the plans and purposes of God’s Kingdom that are being carried out by God’s people. And, Satan does not give up any ground without a fight!

But remember that God works best when all seems lost, when there’s no hope, when failure is inevitable, when it seems impossible to succeed!

So, we must stand firm in our faith when Satan causes adversity to attempt to deter us from obeying God.

We know that God will eventually rescue us and secure the final victory in our behalf.

“Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.” (Ephesians 6:11, NLT

The Coming Kingdom – Matthew 15:30-31

“A vast crowd brought to him people who were lame, blind, crippled, those who couldn’t speak, and many others. They laid them before Jesus, and he healed them all. The crowd was amazed! Those who hadn’t been able to speak were talking, the crippled were made well, the lame were walking, and the blind could see again!” Jesus returned to a predominantly Gentile area and performed many miracles. Though Jesus was sent primarily for Israel’s sake, His coming inaugurated the Kingdom of God and also the beginning of Gentile salvation. These healings were evidence that the Kingdom of God had broken into history through Jesus’ ministry and that it was available and accessible to everyone. The Kingdom of God is a Kingdom that has come and is coming. Jesus came to this world not only to die for our sins, but also to teach us how to live in this present and future Kingdom. The Kingdom of God is a spiritual nation that is active in this world now to prepare its citizens for a heavenly Kingdom that is to come. As a citizen of God’s Kingdom, what you do today and everyday in this world, in this present life, in this Kingdom that has come, is preparation for eternal life in God’s Coming Kingdom.

Living for the Future in the Present – Matthew 4:17

“From then on Jesus began to preach, Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.” When the ministry of Jesus formally inaugurated the Kingdom of God on Earth as described in this verse, what was formerly distant, far away, or out of reach to humanity came close, intimate, and available to every individual human being. Jesus declared that God’s Kingdom is so close one can personally encounter it. Jesus taught that the Kingdom of God is a spiritual nation that is active in this world to prepare His disciples for a heavenly Kingdom coming in the future. Many Christians struggle with how to prepare for their eternal future in the present. When you become a citizen or subject of God’s Kingdom, the old order of your life passes away and is displaced by God’s Kingdom ruling over your life. The redemptive power of God’s rule and reign enables a new way of living where your hope for an eternal future impacts the way your live in the present reality.

Kingdom Profitability – 2 Timothy 1:14

“By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.” The Apostle Paul told Timothy to safeguard the gifts of the Holy Spirit that God had given him. Paul wanted Timothy to be bold in using the gifts of ministry entrusted to him through the in-dwelling power and presence of the Holy Spirit. We, like Timothy, are all like branch banks with whom God makes a deposit of His Holy Spirit for safe-keeping in our lives. We safeguard the gifts and grace of God entrusted to us by using them! A bank doesn’t make money by keeping all its deposits in the vault. A bank makes money by putting its deposits to work making loans and investments. Remember the teaching of Jesus in the parable of the talents. A master left money for each of his servants while he was gone on a long journey. Two servants invested the money and made more for their master while the other buried the money in a hole in the ground. The servants that invested the money were considered faithful and were entrusted with more responsibility while the other servant was considered unfaithful and sent away. Jesus said, “For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away” (Matthew 25:29). To be faithful in the Kingdom of God, you must be profitable. Put the gifts of the Holy Spirit entrusted to you by God to work for the growth of His Kingdom.

I Pledge Allegiance to Jesus – Colossians 1:13-14

“He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins” (Colossians 1:13-14, ESV).

Just as God rescued his people from slavery in Egypt under the old covenant, He has now delivered us from the domain of darkness, that is, from the realm of Satan and the powers of evil.

The moral dilemma each of us must confront is not how sinful we are but whose side we are on. You are either a citizen of the evil kingdom or a citizen of God’s Kingdom (unfortunately, the default is the evil kingdom).

While this conflict between good and evil is of cosmic proportions, its legal resolution is individually transacted when one transfers citizenship from the evil kingdom to God’s Kingdom as a result of God’s redemption and the forgiveness of one’s sins through God’s Son, Jesus.

There is no middle-of-the-road, no opting out, no riding-the-fence in the matter of your eternal destination.

Your citizenship is either in the evil kingdom or God’s kingdom.

So, don’t put Kingdom citizenship off any longer. Take the pledge!

Swear allegiance to Jesus and become a citizen of God’s Kingdom today!

Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other. By myself I have sworn, from my mouth has gone out in righteousness a word that shall not return. To me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear allegiance. (Isaiah 45:22-24, ESV)
