Everything Is Awesome – Jeremiah 6:13-14

LegoMoviePicture“For from the least of them even to the greatest of them, everyone is greedy for gain. And from the prophet even to the priest everyone deals falsely. They have healed the brokenness of My people superficially, saying ‘Peace, peace,’ but there is no peace” (Jeremiah 6:13-14, NASB).

The LEGO Movie is an animated adventure comedy film based on the Lego line of construction toys. The story line is comical yet unnerving because it presents a seemingly plausible explanation for the state of the world in which we live. The Lego characters live in a world that is both utopian and dystopian. They live lives that are cheerily clueless.

The theme song for the movie, Everything Is Awesome, which is played repeatedly throughout the movie, highlights this disconnect:

Everything is awesome
Everything is cool when you’re part of a team
Everything is awesome
When we’re living our dream

Because everything is not awesome in the Lego universe. The irony is that the inhabitants of the Lego world think everything is awesome when their world is about to come to an abrupt and disastrous end. And, this disconnect demonstrates how hopelessly superficial their lives really are.

Unfortunately, the superficiality of their world has lured them into complacency. They go about their daily routine without any real cares or concerns because they believe everything is awesome. But, in reality, their world is everything but awesome!

The Lego world depicted in this movie very much resembles the state of affairs described by God through the prophet Jeremiah in the nation of Judah prior to the Babylonian attack on Jerusalem and the subsequent destruction of the Temple. God repeats this accusation against his people almost verbatim in vs. 8:10-11. And the similarities of the post-modern world in which we live to both the Lego world of the movie and the nation of Judah prior to Babylonian captivity are disturbing.

So, the best way to prevent being drawn into complacency by the superficiality of this post-modern world is to know that only God is awesome. And, unless it’s God making your world awesome, then it’s really not awesome. Without God making everything in your universe awesome, your happiness is artificial and your success is superficial and any satisfaction you derive from either will not last.

Everything is awesome in your life when the Awesome God is Lord of your life!

You shall not dread them, for the Lord your God is in your midst, a great and awesome God. (Deuteronomy 7:21, NASB)  O God, You are awesome from Your sanctuary. The God of Israel Himself gives strength and power to the people. Blessed be God! (Psalm 68:35, NASB)  Let them praise Your great and awesome name; Holy is He. (Psalm 99:3, NASB)  He has sent redemption to His people; He has ordained His covenant forever; Holy and awesome is His name. (Psalm 111:9, NASB) Men shall speak of the power of Your awesome acts, And I will tell of Your greatness. (Psalm 145:6, NASB)
