Long ago God spoke to our ancestors by the prophets at different times and in different ways. In these last days, he has spoken to us by his Son (Hebrews 1:1-2, CSB).
Are you listening? Because God is speaking.
God spoke in a variety of ways in the Old Testament. The revelation given through the Old Testament prophets was brought in various ways – sometimes through parables, narrative, prophecy, psalms, proverbs, and sometimes through some very dramatic or unorthodox methods:
- God spoke to Moses by a burning bush (Exodus 3).
- God spoke to Elijah by a still, small voice (1 Kings 19).
- God spoke to Isaiah by a heavenly vision (Isaiah 6).
- God spoke to Hosea by his family crisis (Hosea 1:2).
- God spoke to Amos by a basket of fruit (Amos 8:1).
Hebrews is a book deeply rooted in the Old Testament. Hebrews has 29 quotations and 53 allusions to the Old Testament. Though the Old Covenant came by the hands of angels to Moses, the book of Hebrews declares that a better covenant came by a better means, Jesus, the Son of God.
Jesus is now God’s chief spokesperson!
But, in the person of Jesus we don’t just hear God speaking. In Him we also see Who God is and What He is like. Vs. 3 describes Him as “the radiance of God’s glory and the exact expression of his nature, sustaining all things by his powerful word.”
The language of Hebrews echoes Old Testament descriptions of the appearance of God’s glory in Israel’s tabernacle and temple. In other words, the New Testament Christ manifests God’s glory no less than how God’s glory was manifested in the Old Testament temple and tabernacle.
The message of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection, the gospel, is God speaking to us today–in these last days– but even more powerfully and even more distinctly than He did in Old Testament times…. because God Himself has personally delivered the message.
So, are you listening? Because God is speaking–to you!
He said, “Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it.” (Luke 11:28 CSB)
